Why mentors

New perspectives lead to fresh ideas, and who knows where fresh ideas could lead you? Usually although not always mentors end up working with younger mentees, sometimes much younger. Different generations think and act differently. If you are to be an effective leader, you need to have an understanding of how younger generations see things and where they can make a difference to the organisation. The intimacy of a mentoring relationship offers a unique insight into these generational differences.

Do you remember a teacher, a coach or a former boss who said or did something that changed the trajectory of your life? This is your chance to do that for someone else. Not every mentoring partnership is life changing but we see enough of it to know that every mentor has the potential to instigate surprising change. With that confidence, you can feel more assured about your skills and the day-to-day work you produce. This confidence is necessary when negotiating with supervisors for promotions, raises or other advancement opportunities.

Mentorship serves as an opportunity to look outside your usual network and potentially connect with someone very different from you. For example, you and your mentee may come from different backgrounds or generations. When you discuss ideas or situations, you both have different perspectives and approaches.

Listening to your mentee's perspective may help you think differently or discover something you would not have otherwise. This ability can help devise more innovative or creative solutions at work. Beyond providing you recognition or other external benefits, mentorship can offer inner fulfillment. Knowing that you made a positive impact on someone's life or career can make you feel good. If you received mentorship early in your career, serving as one can offer an opportunity to pay it forward.

And one day, you may serve as inspiration for your mentee to do the same for someone else. Mentorship lets you think about and share your experiences. While assessing your positive and negative experiences, you may discover lessons that benefit both the mentee and yourself.

Being a mentor may also remind you of what you enjoy about your profession, which can help you feel more engaged at work. Or, if you realize you are unhappy about some things, you can think about ways to improve the situation. When participating in an employer's mentoring program, you use your knowledge and experience to help strengthen their employees.

When these employees understand their roles' expectations and form positive work habits, it can make them more efficient and productive. Besides positive business results, these skills can develop a positive culture and more effective collaboration. Find jobs. Company reviews. Find salaries. Upload your resume. Sign in. It made me reflect on my own career and the role mentorship has played. Mentorship—being a mentor as well as being a mentee—came late into my career. Navigating and maneuvering it is critical. And a combination of soft and hard skills is often at the heart of this. Having a mentor, usually a person who has more experience, provides an opportunity to glean an understanding of the best ways to accomplish this. In my career, I came to a point where my progression stalled despite being a top performer.

And this is where learning and connecting really helped me break through it. To be clear, I did not have a single mentor or a formalized regular cadence, but what I did have was a small network to lean into for different perspectives. And from there, I began to apply those tips, build allies in the right places and make my strengths visible to those who mattered. What does this mean for companies and organizations when their employees have the benefits of mentorship?

In my case, having this guidance and advice allowed me to take on career opportunities that I otherwise may not have. My confidence soared, and my goals found clarity. And that meant my organization at that time was able to harness my talent most effectively and translate that into deepening employee engagement—I stayed longer and contributed more.

Mentorship also lends a voice to many who, on their own, are not able to traverse the journey. Having a wide variety of voices around the table is extremely beneficial to running any business, organization or project, because it brings different solutions and perspectives that translate toward direct success and, in turn, result in a positive cascading effect.

Feeling positive about their company and place of work More connection with senior leadership. Feeling that their organization is providing opportunity for career growth. More knowledge and certainty about the future course of their organization. Mentoring Programs have been found to statistically reduce employee turnover. A study conducted on 5, newly hired sales representatives showed that those who were part of a mentoring program reported a massively higher commitment to their organization and much lower rates of intending to leave than those who did not participate in a mentoring program.
